Introduction to Photography
November 18, 2023 9:15am - 1:30pm
Vic West Community Center - Reading Room
Did you just get a new camera and not sure how to make the most of it? Are you dusting one off that's been sitting in a bag or closet for the last few years? Are you still using Auto Mode? Do the buttons and dials on the camera seem daunting? Why aren't my images in focus? Why are they so dark or bright? If you've ever had questions like this, then this workshop is for you!
This workshop will help you understand the functions of your camera, as well as compositional techniques to use when out shooting. We will also explore an introduction to post-processing, including how to properly import and apply an edit to your photos. See below for a detailed itinerary!
The cost of this workshop is $175.
Payment can be made through PayPal or email money transfer. Please contact aaron@aaronvonhagen.com if you have any questions.
ITINERARY
0915 - 1215 Starting with in-class instruction, we will cover the main functions of your camera. We will explore the technical side with shutter speeds, apertures, and ISO, which comprise the Exposure Triangle. We will go through functions of gear, different types of lenses, and filters.
We will also delve into compositional techniques, which will hopefully help you to approach a scene with a different set of eyes, creating stronger images overall.
1215 - 1245 Lunch (not included)
1245 - 1330 We will return back to the classroom for some post-shoot instruction. We will learn how to properly label, keyword, name, and set the destination of your photos before we import them to your computer. Instruction on how to perform a basic edit in Lightroom, such as cropping, colour toning, image sharpening, and straightening horizon lines will also be given. Then, we will learn how to take our images and export them in different formats, and to optimize them for sharing on social media with your friends and family.
What should I bring to the event?
Any camera you wish to learn on. Although the instruction will be taught as if using a DSLR or mirrorless, similar practices, principles, and techniques can be brought into any type of photography.
At least one lens.
Memory Card.
Batteries.
OPTIONAL:
Tripod, filters, laptop.
The post-processing will be done using Lightroom, which offers a free-trial for those interested. If you do not use Lightroom, a lot of the same importing and editing practices are done using different platforms and this shouldn't be an issue.
